I’ve got a few things I’ve been meaning to share and they seem like good ones to do around the turning of the new year. I’ve been looking through my photos and there are always plenty about food: either cooking it, eating it, or drawing it. So I’ve been meaning to dig in and see what it looked like this year.
Drinks
Not pictured is whiskey, calvados, and a variety of teas. Since we’ve been in the UK I’ve been enjoying so many teas, and I keep this David Shrigley postcard on my office door:
Cooking
If you know me in real life, you know I was a picky eater for my early life. But as I’ve gotten older I have continued to grow in all the ways around food. I haven’t been cooking as much as I did in Philadelphia (I would can applesauce and jam, make pies and bread, and make lots of unusual recipes). We did do some new French cooking during our time in Normandie this summer, and we were fed very well during our trip to Italy and Slovenia, and I did Thanksgiving for 15 this fall (SO much fun!). So I’m hoping to find time for more cooking for joy in 2024. I hope we will get more visitors to our house so I can cook for you this year.
Food items
There was also a bounty of packaged food this year. The fried egg white chocolate corn was a surprising hit, and I wish I’d shown the scale of the Wilhelmina mints (from The Netherlands when I went to a conference in August). They were really big! I hope to get some new food books this year….the Edible one looked pretty good :)
Art Food
I had a couple of lovely group dinners with students this year (both in London and in Italy), and picked up that delightful lace pretzel on my travels. I also realised I have been doing some food related workshops in my teaching. The cookie drawing I started in my first year of teaching at MICA in Baltimore, and the still life drawing has been a joy the last two years with my first year students where they examine their drawing process and reconsider how they might engage with representative work.
Happy New Year
I’ll be reflecting a little longer on 2023 into January and thinking about what might come in 2024. I hope you had some goodness in 2023 yourself, and that we can continue to think about how to move forward and make a better future together.
COOKIE DRAWING WORKSHOP?! Yay! I’ll Ask you about it. ....
